Join our online Direct Payment Forum on PA employment status
KCIL’s next Direct Payment Forum will be a joint online event for people in Kingston and Croydon.
This forum is for anyone who uses Direct Payments and has a self-employed Personal Assistant, or is thinking about using one.
Self-employed PAs can be a flexible and positive way to arrange support. However, it is important to understand whether a PA is genuinely self-employed, or whether the working arrangement means they should legally be treated as an employee.
This can be a confusing area. It is not always as simple as what is written on an invoice, contract or agreement. The way the support works in real life also matters.
At this session, David Ashley from Independent Living Group will talk through the new guidance on Personal Assistant Employment Status. David was part of the team involved in producing the guidance, which was developed to help people understand this topic more clearly and make confident, informed decisions.
The session will cover:
- what employment status means
- why it matters for people using Direct Payments
- when a PA may be genuinely self-employed
- when an arrangement may look more like employment
- what questions you may need to ask about your own arrangements
- where to get further support if you are unsure

Date: Wednesday 24 June
