June marks Pride Month, a time where globally people come together to celebrate LGBTQ+ people and raise awareness of the issues that they face.
Why, though, is KCIL, a disability charity posting about Pride? To quote a recent tweet from our fellow disability charity Scope:
Human identities don't neatly fit into boxes. Not everyone is simply one thing or another. People can be disabled as well as LGBTQ+, and they may face additional barriers and negative attitudes. Those experiences are important.

We couldn’t have said it any better!
So what is KCIL doing to be more LGBTQ+ friendly? Not just for June, but for every month of the year?
- Four people on the KCIL team have recently attended LGBTQ+ awareness training, with another two attending the training later this month. We aim to roll out the training to the entire team over the next year.
- KCIL has an equal opportunities policy supporting LGBTQ+ team members.
- KCIL actively works with external partners to make sure that when we ask people to fill in forms to access our services, the forms allow the person filling in the paperwork to acknowledge their identity in a way that reflects them.
- KCIL aims to regularly highlight LGBTQ+-specific services that may be helpful to the people that we support, from national services such as Switchboard to local LGBTQ+ groups.
- KCIL aims to regularly highlight the stories of disabled LGBTQ+ people on its website and social media channels.
KCIL aims to support people as they are. As a member-led organisation, we always welcome feedback about our services (and not just from members!). Are you a disabled LGBTQ+ person in South West London; is there something we could do better? We’re always listening; you’re welcome to get in touch at 020 8546 9603 (ask for Jo, KCIL’s Office Manager) or email [email protected].
