Becoming an Employer
Once the direct payment agreement is signed with the council, you can start to recruit a PA(s) to provide the support you need. Find out more by visiting our Recruiting a PA page.
Once you have found someone you would like as your PA, you must complete a few checks to ensure they are suitable for the work. These include an enhanced DBS check (which KCIL will support you with), the right to work in the UK, and references. If the PA is self-employed, additional checks, including a Unique Taxpayer Reference, insurance, and training, need to be completed.
You must check that a job applicant is allowed to work in the UK before you employ them. Find out more here.
The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) helps employers make safer recruitment decisions and prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable people and children. KCIL can help to arrange a DBS check, find out more here.
It is a legal requirement that employers in the UK have Employers’ Liability Insurance in place. The council arranges this if you employ a PA. If you use a self-employed PA, the PA should have their own insurance in place.
It is important to remember that your PA(s) has a number of rights and entitlements which are laid down in law. KCIL can support you to ensure that you meet your obligations as an employer. Find out more here.
As an employer, you will need to comply with health and safety regulations designed to keep your PAs safe in the workplace. Find out more here.
